J. K. MINTON – A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Joseph Kelly (J. K.) Minton was born at Little Rock, Arkansas. He is married to the former Ruth Elliott of Chase City, Virginia. They have four children and seventeen grandchildren.

Reared in a Southern Baptist Church in rural Arkansas, near Little Rock, Dr. Minton accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior through the ministry of the Crystal Hill Baptist Church. As a teenager, he served this church in various capacities, including Music Director.

After graduation from high school and one year at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Dr. Minton received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy (USNA). After graduation from USNA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Science, he served for nine years as an officer in the Navy Nuclear Submarine Force and qualified as a naval nuclear engineer. He served in various assignments on Fast Attack Nuclear Submarines including Sonar Officer, Damage Control Assistant, Reactor Division Officer, Training Officer, and Chief Engineer.

In May 1975, Dr. Minton responded to the call to pastoral ministry by resigning his active commission in the Navy and by entering Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) at Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated from seminary in 1977 with a Master of Divinity degree and accepted the pastorate of the Lazybrook Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. During his seventeen-year ministry at this church, Dr. Minton earned the Doctor of Ministry degree from SWBTS.

Throughout his pastoral ministry, Dr. Minton has given strong support to the work of cooperative ministry. While serving as Moderator of Union Baptist Association (UBA) (1987-89) in Houston, Texas, he led the Association through two years of difficult transition which involved calling a new Executive Director and redefining the mission of UBA. Dr. Minton served for seven years as a member of the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT) and has served on various state convention committees and boards.

Dr. Minton resigned from Lazybrook Baptist Church when he was appointed a Home Missionary with the North American Mission Board.  He was called to serve as the Executive Director of the Interstate Baptist Association (IBA) in the Northwest Baptist Convention (NWBC). The IBA is a fellowship of approximately 70 Southern Baptist churches and missions with offices in Portland, Oregon, and serving the thirteen counties that include Portland, Oregon, Vancouver, Washington, the Pacific coast, and the Columbia River Gorge.

In August 1998, Dr. Minton was called to serve as the Director of Missions of the Bluebonnet Baptist Association (BBA) in central Texas. The BBA is a fellowship of approximately 80 Southern Baptist churches and missions with offices in New Braunfels, Texas, serving the area along the “I-35 corridor” between the cities of San Antonio and Austin.   In his ministry at BBA, Dr. Minton has led the association to give priority to church planting, evangelism, and leadership development.  He retired as Director of Missions in January 2010.

In January 2010, Dr. Minton was called to serve as the Church Health Consultant in Bluebonnet Baptist Association to assist church leaders to understand the church situation, envision the desired future for the church, and develop the strategy to improve the health of the church.

While serving in the ministry, Dr. Minton remained active in the United States Naval Reserve and retired with the rank of Commander, United States Navy Reserve.
